Dangerous goods are materials or items with hazardous properties that, if not properly controlled, pose a potential risk to human health and safety, infrastructure and/or their means of transport.
Dangerous goods, often recognized as harmful materials, can be pure chemicals, mixtures of substances, manufactured products or articles that may pose a risk to humans, animals or the environment if not handled correctly during use or transport.
The Model UN Regulations use a classification system in which each hazardous substance or article is assigned to a CLASS, depending on the nature of the hazard it presents. There are 9 classes, some of which are further subdivided into others.
Class 1: Explosives
Class 2: Gases
Class 3: Flammable liquids
Class 4.1/4.2/4.3: Dangerous Goods
Class 5.1/5.2: Oxidizing Agents and Organic Peroxides
Class 6.1/6.2: Toxic and Infectious Substances
Class 7: Radioactives
Class 8: Corrosives
Class 9: Miscellaneous Hazardous Materials and Objects
